Cute and quirky pennant flags are a great way to mix up your gallery wall and add a personal touch to your home. In this tutorial I will show you how to create your own template and add an embroidered design to it. The You're so Golden design I created is available as a PDF pattern on my Etsy store.

To create the Pennant Flag Template you will need:
- A3 Card or Paper
- Ruler/Pattern Master
- Pencil
- Scissors
To create the Pennant Flag you will need:
- 100% Cotton Fabric (approx 25cm x 35cm)
- Iron-on Interfacing
- Erasable Fabric Pen
- Fabric Scissors
- Sewing Machine (You could also sew by hand if you prefer)
- Dowel Rod
To create an Embroidered Design you will need:
- 8" Embroidery Hoop
- Embroidery Scissors
- Embroidery Needle
- Embroidery Threads
- You're So Golden Embroidery Pattern (optional)
How to Make the Pennant Flag Template
Draw a rectangle measuring 20cm x 25cm on the A3 paper or card. Mark 19cm down on each side and draw a 45 degree line on each side to the centre point, this has created your pennant shape.
You now need to add a section at the top for the dowel rod. Add 4.5cm to the top of the rectangle, and draw a line 1cm down from the top (this will be your seam allowance).
Add 1.5cm seam allowance to each of the sides. Cut your template out and label.

How to Make the Pennant Flag
1. Take your fabric and iron on the interfacing.

2. Using an erasable fabric pen or pencil, draw around the template onto the fabric.

3. Add the seam allowance and top markings.

4. Using a good light source or a lightbox transfer the embroidery design onto the fabric, use a ruler to make sure the design is in the centre.

5. Place your fabric into the embroidery hoop and stitch the design. If you are using my PDF pattern you will find the stitch guide and thread colours in there.

6. Remove the hoop and press the design carefully to avoid removing any of the seam markings. Cut out the pennant shape.

7. Turn the piece over and press the 1cm top seam allowance down, then the 5cm side seam allowances, then the additional 1cm seam allowances (this creates a double folded hem). Then finally fold and press the top down. Pin into place for sewing.

8. Sew the folded hems down, using stitch length 4 on your sewing machine or stitch by hand using a back stitch.

9. Give the piece a final press, removing any of the markings that may be left.

10. Finally insert the dowel rod to the top, cut and attach a piece of embroidery thread to each side, wrapping around a few times and knotting.
