Around July last year a colleague showed me how to create Macramé keyrings, since then I have dipped in and out of making a few pieces. I made a couple of bags, wall hangings and more keyrings, I even had a Macramé evening with a friend! But, this year I hadn't picked up the Macramé cord out of my craft drawer, until I saw a simple raffia phone bag on Pull & Bear. I have always been an advocate of making things yourself, so I thought I would try and make a Macramé version, and document it along the way so I could share the pattern!

Firstly I apologise for the dark photos at the beginning of the tutorial, I started making this late one evening.

Secondly, this bag fits my Samsung S10, to make it fit a longer phone simply add more rows to the bottom or for a wider phone add a couple more cords to each panel.

You Will Need:

Macramé Cord - I used this one from Hobbycraft

Two D Rings

Keyring (Optional)

Tools:

Scissors

Needle & Thread

Tape

This project uses Larks Head and Square Knots.

Step 1:

Cut 12 pieces of cord approx 150cm long and cut 1 piece of cord approx 24cm long. Use tape to secure the short pieces to a surface.

Step 2:

Use a larks head knot to attach all twelve cords to the short piece. Leave a gap in the middle so you have two groups of 6.

Step 3:

Take the first 4 cords on the left and create a single square knot, repeat for the next two sets of four strings.

Step 4:

Take the middle four cords from the first two square knots and create a single square knot, repeat for the second four middle cords.

Step 5:

Carry on this pattern until you have 16 rows of square knots.

Step 6:

Do this again for the right hand side set of cords. You will now have your two panels.

Step 7:

Remove from the surface. Cut 4 more pieces of cord, again 150cm long. Take your D rings and the gap in the centre of your two sides, Larks Head 2 pieces over the D ring and string. Repeat for the other side, grouping the two loose ends together.

Step 8:

Thread the two outer cords through the first gaps and create a single and a half square knot.

Step 9:

Thread the outer cords through the next loop and add the single and a half square knot. Repeat until you get to the bottom of the side and then repeat for the other side.

Step 10:

Turn the bag inside out, the next part is slightly tricky but can always undone if it doesn't work first time (I did this, the first time I tried I had a big gap!). Square knot the bottom together by taking 8 cords at a time. Take the two outer cords from the last side knot and group with two cords from the closest knots on the main panels. Take the two centre cords from the last side knot and the next two from the same knot on the main panels. Single Square knot these together.

Step 11:

Repeat until you have completed all of the bottom knots, every string from the piece should have been used.

Step 12:

Trim all of the bottom strings.

Step 13:

Turn the bag the right way round, take a needle and matching thread and add a couple of stitched under the D rings to secure them.

Step 14:

To create the strap, measure across you body to where you would like the bag to sit. Add approx 10cm and cut 3 cords of this length. Tape them to a surface.

Step 15:

Plait the entire length of the strap.

Step 16:

Loop through the D ring and stitch to secure.

To add a finishing touch, I created a simple tassel keyring! For this I used a contrasting colour and cut several lengths, looped through a keyring ring and tied together with a Gathering knot.

Now you have the perfect little bag to carry your phone in! I've been using mine whe going out for walks and don't need a much stuff, but also don't have any pockets!
